Air access from the North Shore - the convenience at the heart of the debate.
Helicopter use keeps coming up, so I want to lay out both sides as fairly as I can and propose a path forward. Add your own view - and quotes from neighbors - in the comments.
The Case For
The case that air access is a real benefit to the community:
It lets residents reach Manhattan and other destinations far more easily by air.
It generates meaningful tax revenue for the Village.
Aviation is part of Centre Island's history — sea planes in particular have long been a part of life on the water here.
For people who have to commute or travel regularly, air access can be the deciding factor in whether they can live here at all. A blanket restriction risks repelling exactly the kind of residents and taxpayers who would otherwise be a real asset to the community.
The Case Against
The concerns neighbors raise, which are just as real:
Helicopters are noisy, even if only for brief, occasional periods.
Centre Island is a peaceful, quiet place, and much of its character comes from that calm. We should protect it.
No one wants a neighbor flying in or out in the middle of the night, a helicopter passing directly overhead, or that noise right up against their property line - anything that genuinely impacts a family's use and enjoyment of their own home.
That said, very few people would object if the noise were no worse than activities we already accept (a leaf blower, say), if the hours and frequency were reasonable, and if every impacted neighbor had willingly given their consent.
